Beautiful writing, and highly evocative of the severe Labrador landscape. Also the diction and vocabulary was fascinating and of the time and place.  I am interested in reading Crummey's other novels.

Michael Crummey's writing is just so...I don't even know the word. He writes about the harsh landscape of Newfoundland, the desolate lives his characters live but does so beautifully even when relaying distasteful events.

An uncomfortable story about young children left orphaned on a remote section of Newfoundland when their parents and infant sister die of sickness. They make a go of it, fishing, gardening through the year waiting for the annual visit from a supply ship. Left only with themselves to depend on, live with, love, the story goes in a predictable direction but not in a salacious or detailed way.

It's the kind of story that leaves you wishing the characters could get a break but when they do you wish things could go back to the way they were. Slow-moving but suspenseful at the same time.

That bear killing scene though....
