The premise of this book is that it's a primer into the feminist movement, but looking at this book from that perspective, I feel that it's failed. The language is so dense and sometimes a challenge for even me. The author never defines terms like "imperialism" so it's hard to follow if you are unfamiliar. Additionally, the book focuses on "wrong turns" within the movement after the 60s (I think, I forget the exact decade.) I enjoyed this because constructive criticism within any movement is super important (which hooks acknowledges in the end in a brilliant manner) and I was able to compare missteps of the movement in the past to the missteps of the movement in the present, I think that as a beginner, it would be difficult to care or see the importance of this criticism. To an outsider this book is just outdated, petty grievances between the author and her contemporaries.
All in all I give it 4 stars. This is a good book to start reading hooks, but not a good book to get into feminism.

a much needed reminder to self that i do not exist for men and my value as a human being is not judged by how desirable i am to the patriarchy!!!!!!!!

I love bell hooks’ writing style. I love how she doesn’t miss a beat, or a perspective. I love her attention to detail, her straightforwardness. I never feel that she repeats herself just for the sake of word count.

I learned a lot from this book, I definitely intend to reread this, get the physical book and highlight some things.
