Whenever I feel like I will fail everything - school, life etc - I take this book and read it. Sometimes only parts of it, sometimes the whole thing, but it has the same effect on me everytime: I feel motivated. I feel that I can do something with my life.
Despite that, as every Stephen Fry book, this is witty, interesting, but also fast to read.

A fascinating personal history of one of the U.K.'s best comedian/presenter/writer/journalist. Interesting background about his early life, and some of the events from his coming-of-age that molded the entertainer.

Hilarisch en goed geschreven verhaal van Fry over zijn tijd op de Engelse kostschool. Sport, studie, seks, diefstal en bijzondere verhalen, het komt allemaal voorbij. Genieten!

I’ve always enjoyed listening to Stephen Fry, but this the first of his books that I have read. I find I like him just a little bit more for having read his thoughts on his early life.
Witty, charming, over-the-top, very colourful and brutally honest is the only way you can describe this autobiography covering the first troubled, chaotic and indulgent twenty years of Stephen's life. He is completely honest throughout, showing that even though at times he can be a complete and utter arse, he can be man enough to admit he can be a complete and utter arse. His style of writing and frequent diversions are as witty and entertaining as the man himself and he writes so well you literally have his voice in your head as you read, describing all of his little and large indiscretions, mistakes and down right balls-ups. Stephen's wit, charm and intelligence come to the fore throughout this book, but without making the reader feel inferior or insignificant. This book will make you laugh and cry, take you to the depths of despair then on to the dizzying heights of utter joy. A superbly written autobiography and an even better read, this is Fry at his most honest and vulnerable but also his most brilliant and witty.

Whoa, that was quite a roller coaster. Stephen Fry has some amazing smarts and linguistic craft, but is (or was) a hot mess emotionally. I could not stop reading, even though at times it was more than I really wanted to know. Something of a therapeutic info-dump, it is undoubtedly energetic, but could have used some pruning perhaps. Though I appreciate how candid and open he is.
I'm glad he turned out OK and able to accept himself, but though he insists it is not to blame for his troubles, really one can't help thinking the English class/school system is seriously messed up. Not that America has much to brag about there.
One also has to imagine that his fate -- after being caught stealing credit cards and going on a spending spree -- would have been quite different if he'd not been white and from an upper class family. Let off on probation, he could go on to Cambridge and an acting career. If he'd been a different color and class I do not believe that would have been so easy.
