A love story between a veteran of the Algerian independence and his fallen comrade's daughter. While moving, many, many paragraphs were dedicated to describing an Oedipal love that left me uncomfortable. The writing was ultimately poetic (sometimes I felt as if I was reading Arabic poetry) but I wanted more.

رائعة.
شعرت في وسطها ببعض الملل لشاعريتها المفرطة، لكنها هجمت علي في نهايتها فداهمني الحزن بجنوده الأوفياء، الذين هم أحبابي الموتى. تقلبت كثيرا قبل أن أنام وأنا اشعر ببرد شديد في عظامي.
حسنا، قد لا يكون للبرد علاقة بالرواية فقد كان أخي الأحمق قد ترك جهاز التكييف دائرا في الغرفة.

أسلوب أحلام و حديثها عن الثورة الجزائرية كانا السبب الوحيد الذي أجبرني على متابعة الرواية الى اخرها
ما عدا ذلك كانت الرواية مملة بعض الشيء اذ شعرت انني اضيع وقتي في قراءة هذيان شخص قد فقد شابة اراد ان يملكها لاشباع رغبته و مع ادراكه التام ان الامر لن يفلح، واصل التذمر و لوم الحياة.
ما عدا ذلك كانت الرواية مملة بعض الشيء اذ شعرت انني اضيع وقتي في قراءة هذيان شخص قد فقد شابة اراد ان يملكها لاشباع رغبته و مع ادراكه التام ان الامر لن يفلح، واصل التذمر و لوم الحياة.

Poetic and very much the Arabic style of writing ( it is after all a translation of an original Algerian novel).
I think reading the book as an English reader it does come off long winded, full of cheese and ‘omg Khaled can we see some action and get to the point now my friend’ 😂 .
Knowing some of how the Arabic language works and reading it from that point of view I thought this was really a sweet book.
I think love in the Arab culture takes time to grow and nurture. To put into words all the excitement, the metaphors and the feeeeelllls (as I like to call it) has had to take on many descriptions and comparisons.
All together - I liked it and I may have had no choice but to read it as it’s the only book I took on holiday 😝 💕

كنت أتوقع أن يكون هذا الجزء من الثلاثية تكرارا فقط من نظرة أخرى، لكنني تفاجأت بإعجابي بهذه الرواية أكثر من عابر سرير.

كان حسان نقيا كزئبق و طيبا حد السذاجة . كانت يخاف حتى أن يحلم و عندما بدأ يحلم قتلوه
و مات حسان .. أخي الذي لم يكن يهتم كثيرا بالاغريق و الآلهة اليونانية
كان له اله واحد فقط و بعض الاسطوانات القديمة
مات و حب له سوى الفرقاني و أم كلثوم و صوت عبد الباسط عبد الصمد
مات و لا حلم له سوى الحصول على جواز سفر للحج و ثلاجة
لقد تحققت نصف أحلامه . لقد أهدى له الوطن ثلاجة ينتظرني فيها بهدوء كعادته لأشيعه هذه المرة إلى مثواه الاخير
شيعت حسان بدمعة و حسرة و ما اهتممت لبقية الشخصيات بقدر ما اهتممت لأمر ذاك المواطن البسيط
طريقة أحلام جميلة في إيصال الفكرة و المشاعر
لكنني حتى الآن لا أقبل حب خالد لابنة سي الطاهر ربما لأنها لم تستحقه أصلا
ركزت على المقاطع المتعلقة بقسنطينة و استمتعت بقراءتها قرأتها و أعدت قراءتها و شعرت بالانبهار عكس ما شعرت به حين كان يتحدث عن حبيبته المزعومة ككاتبة لقد كان ذلك من أكثر المقاطع التي أضجرتني
أحببت التحليل لقسنطينة في آخر الصفحات من الحالة الاقتصادية إلى الاجتماعية و السياسية

This book was given as an assignment by my teacher of arabic but as well known and loved as it is, I didn't like it.
It had a promising start but then ... The only things that got it 2 stars are

how it spoke about the algerian revolution (how the country was portrayed as a mother, the sacrifice... ), the politics, Ziyad and Si Tahar who were the only characters I appreciated.and some beautiful passages that are quote worthy.
