So many things to love... vivid descriptions, believable characters, accurate portrayal of multiple levels of pre-Regency society. Very excellent writing. No real surprises in this book, because writing tone and foreshadowing make it clear when something bad is going to happen.
Or perhaps it is because, ultimately, nothing good ever happens in these books. Angst. Drama. Sense of impending doom. I went ahead and read the brief description for the next couple books in the series, and I see the series becomes even more like a soap opera. Not for me.

I loved the first book, and this sequel is even better. I love the characters even when I hate them. The drama in this book keeps me up every night reading longer than I should. Demelza, is now Mrs. Ross Poldark and finds it hard to fill that role. She knows that her husband loved another, and still might but she is determined to get Ross's love. Ross tries to gain rights to the community mines, but has George Warleggan in his way. Francis, his cousin is stuck in the middle. I cannot wait to read the next book!

You will learn about smelting, conditions of 18th century prisons in England, a sickness called the putrid throat, true love, and sorrow.
Winston Graham's Poldark series is a must-read for fans of English historical fiction. I do plan to finish the series eventually.

There is plenty of drama in this Cornish saga with some laughs, often from idle and potty mouthed servant Jud, but plenty of tragedy too. The ending is heartbreaking and I will be reading further to see how this affects Demelza and Ross because even though Demelza has gone through a lot more character growth during these two years, has become a valued member in the community, I wonder can she truly pick herself up after such devastation?
The historical detail of Cornish life in the 18th Century, plus breathtaking scenic descriptions that I can almost smell the salt in the air or feel the suffocating atmosphere of a tin or copper mine collapse, make this a favourite historical novel for me. Graham even touches on smuggling and wrecks and it would be interesting if he explores that more in subsequent books especially since it's the wealthy who profited, not the poor as shown by lack of foodstuffs being transported except for teas and spices to enhance gentry mealtimes.
Wonderful evocative and emotional writing with a diverse, but knowable, range of characters populating this small part of Cornwall. I need to read the next two books before watching Season Two of the BBC adaptation.
