Having read the 841 page Magician Apprentice/Master combo with all the extra bits added in, this was never going to be as good really. However it did have the suitably cheesy fantasy/fairy tale vibe that I was after and it was a bonus that we got to revisit much loved characters and worlds. I don't think the characters were as well developed in this and the pacing was slower compared to the first one but I enjoyed the additional world building and lore and I will definitely be reading the next instalment as well as the other related books. This felt more like set up for the next book, but I'll take it to be honest.
