Holy Crap!

This is the first time a book has had me speechless! From beginning to end it's a rollercoaster ride of emotion.

An author I'm so happy to have discovered, and one I will read more from as soon as I can.

I don't remember how I heard about this one, but when I finally got around to reading it, I had no idea what it was about.

A diner is held hostage when an ex-military with a sniper rifle proceeds to pick them off one by one due to a long-standing animosity with the owners. The really sad thing about this book is not how terrifying the situation is (which it absolutely is), its how, even in this time of crisis, the people inside the diner continue their petty disagreements and jealousies and can't come together in the face of danger. They do things that could get the others killed because of selfish reasons, and instead of working together, they actively work against each other.

A sad portrait of human nature at its worst.

This small novel was gripping from start to finish. The action kicked in right away, and did not let up until the end. And it's a good, original plot - the plight of innocent, and not so innocent, survivors of a sniper attack on a remote diner. The writing is expert and taught, moving the action along while building a world the reader can see. What makes Mountain Home work above everything else, though, are the characters. MacLeod has a true gift for drawing real, flesh and blood people. He makes you like - or hate - them on their merits. When the reader is invested in the characters, they can't help but be there in the muck with them, and the suspense gets ratcheted up quite a few notches. This is my first time reading a Bracken MacLeod book, but won't be my last. Nice job.

This was a great debut novel by any standards. Entirely readable and a little hard to put down towards the end. I was very keen to find out how it panned out. Look forward to reading more by Macleod. Nice to see strong female characters.

Mountain Home is a superb hard core thriller. Mr Macleod has a real gift for character and setting - the people in this story feel painfully real. Likewise, the mill they are put through, while extreme, has the awful ring of authenticity to it. The book evokes Stephen King's The Mist, Rambo, and the action movie genre in general, but has far deeper, realer and richer characterisation than that genre usually musters. This is not thrills for thrills sake, but rather an intense exploration of people under enormous pressure, facing slim odds. It's a story of blood, survival, and the costs of violence. Intelligent and thoughful, without ever veering into pretension, with a crisp, clean prose style, I am mightily impressed with this book, and look forward to more work from this clearly talented author.
