As always, Allison Brennan does not disappoint. I am a huge fan of the Lucy Kincaid series and enjoy watching Lucy evolve as a character. Cut and Run combined Allison's two lead characters (Lucy and Maxine Revere) into one book. The storyline was interesting and I liked how everything was connected. My only real issue was there were too many suspects/characters. I begin to lose track of who was who and how they tied into the story/cases. I am also not a big fan of Maxine Revere's character and prefer Lucy and her story over Max's any day.

After a storm, remains are found belonging to the Albright family. It was assumed that the Albright's fled the country three years ago after stealing millions. When Lucy and Nate are called in to investigate the cold case, they realize things aren't what they seem. The local police department is providing limited information and the youngest child's (Ricky Albright) body isn't with the rest of the family. With no leads on Ricky and no help from local officials, Lucy and Nate are working from scratch.
Meanwhile, Maxine Revere arrives in San Antonio to investigate a current case. The suspect in custody has recanted his confession and the family is asking for Max's help to find out the truth about what happened to Victoria. With the help of Sean Rogan, Max begins to investigate the case and soon learns that Victoria was a very close friend of Lucy's victims. She begins to connect the dots and realizes that there is more to both cases than originally thought.
Lucy, Max, and Sean begin to work together to uncover the truth and bring justice to the two families. As they dig deep into cases, they realize that more than one person has secrets dark enough to kill for ... and that one of them is the next target.

While this may be the 16th installment of the Lucy Kincaid series, Cut and Run was my first introduction to the series and can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone.

FBI agent Lucy Kincaid and her partner Nate are assigned to a case after the remains of the Albright family (mother, father, and two teenage daughters) were discovered following a flood. The family supposedly fled to Mexico three years prior to avoid prosecution on embezzlement charges, but the remains clearly showed the family was executed. Interestingly, the remains of the youngest Albright child were not recovered. Now it is up to Lucy and Nate to figure out exactly what happened to the Albright family, and whether or not Ricky Albright is still alive.

Investigative reporter Maxine Revere travels to San Antonio after the confessed killer of a family friend recants his statement. Max specializes in finding out the truth regardless if someone is guilty or innocent. Max is determined to figure out the motive behind the killer recanting his statement in order to find the truth regarding Victoria’s death. She enlists the help of one Sean Rogan, private investigator and Lucy’s husband. Together, they find themselves deep within embezzlement and money laundering, and they quickly learn that everyone must be a suspect if they are to uncover the truth.

First and foremost, I independently loved both Lucy and Max. While the way that they investigate problems is vastly different from one another, both ladies are determined, strong-willed, and able to hold their own in the most dire of situations. I couldn’t help but root for both of them in there respective investigations.

In terms of plot, the plot was propulsive and I found myself glued to the pages. Both investigations were packed with twists and turns as well as a few red herrings to through us down a rabbit hole or two. At first I was a little confused as we oriented ourselves to these two cases, but I loved watching how the cases unfolded and ultimately were interwoven with one another. I wouldn’t say that the ultimate plot twist took me by surprise, but it made for a wonderfully cohesive story.

Overall, if you love a good whodunit murder mystery with well developed characters and a fast paced and engrossing plot, definitely pick this one up!

Cut and Run was a gripping procedural thriller that included both murder and white collar crimes.

Lucy Kincaid is an FBI agent investigating the unearthed remains of a family executed and killed three years ago - a family of five, but there's only four bodies. Her investigation takes her high up in the Texas corporate world, following the trail of affairs, embezzlement and family secrets.

At the same time as Lucy is investigating a cold case, investigative reporter Maxine Revere is digging deep into the recent murder of Victoria Mills, at the request of the family. There is already a confession, but Max is convinced that it is false, and was given in order to protect family. Max quickly realizes that her case and Lucy's have startling similarities and connections, and they join forces to solve these crimes.

I have to say, the thriller side of this novel was a slow burn for me. It was definitely suspenseful and twisty, but it also seemed fairly easily laid out, and I felt like I knew what was going to happen. The culprits are only lightly kept from you, and eventually it becomes more of a hunt for their whereabouts as opposed to identities.

The one thing I did appreciate was that the two main characters were both strong, independent, will-kick-your-ass women, and those are the ones I love reading about. I can't stand in procedural thrillers when there is a female officer or agent who is shown as "tough" but who also ends up needing protection from the stronger, more intimidating male. Both Lucy and Max were strong-willed, not easily manipulated, and fought hard for what they needed.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read, the story was really interesting, and the inclusion of both murder and embezzlement made it different for me - I don't think I've read too many white collar crime thrillers. I will definitely be checking out more of Brennan's writing.

I really enjoyed this entry in the series. I have not read the Maxine Revere series and she played a large role in the book. I will definitely be reading that series now. A large part of what I enjoy about this series is the relationship and interactions for Lucy and her husband, Sean. And, while that was reduced in this book, I still loved it. The "cold case" that Lucy works ends up being connected to the case that Sean is helping Maxine with. I enjoyed and understood Lucy's concerns about working with Max...It was so Lucy. I also enjoyed the yearning she has to see her family. They have always been very close and not seeing them and losing the very close relationship is hard for her. The storyline is very well done. The author has a lovely writing style that is crisp and fun to read. Her intelligence is evident in every word and in her complex characters. I can't wait for more.

I loved getting back into the Lucy Kincaid novels. It's one of my favorite series!

When a grave of bones is found, it is revealed to be the Albright family. Denise Alright, accused of embezzleing over 3 million dollars from her company. Thought to have fled to Mexico 3 years earlier. Mom, dad, and two kids are in the Grace. But there are no bones for Ricky, the youngest of the family. 9 years old at the time of the family disappearance.... Was he buried elsewhere or did he survive and had been in hiding for the last 3 years?
Lucy is on the case to find out if Ricky is alive and it gets even bigger. Victoria-best friend of Denise is killed the same day the bones are found.
The case had so many twists and turns and new players are constantly brought into light. It was good though a bit complicated at times.
Thanks for another great book Allison Brennan!
