I was looking for something light and instead I got this novel that made me sob three times in 250 pages. The first thing about this book is it’s often funny, but it’s not a comedy (think Catch 22, not Monty Python). Unless you’re going by classical dramatic forms, in which case, sure, it could be a comedy. It’s not Medea, at least.
The second thing is I double-fisted it (I read and also listened to the audiobook separately, which is on Spotify). The audio, narrated by the author, is incredible, and adds so much texture to the POV character. Plus the Irish accent in my head is terrible. I also felt really satisfied actually reading the text alongside, so as not to miss any of the weird and beautiful prose.
I don’t know how hard I’ll recommend this book to others. It might not be for everyone, but historical fiction written with a mix of contemporary and archaic vernacular about prisoners of war staging Euripides in a rat-infested pit was exactly for me. It’s all a little mean spirited at times, but never excessively so. And the anachronistic language always felt intentional, not over the top… with the exception of one nicely crafted reference to a popular shoe brand. I don’t know. I loved this one, you guys.
