Glorious Exploits

WHY IS THIS SO HIGHLY RATED??!
People call it funny, it is not funny. There are no jokes or amusement. There are only misogynistic exploits of an utterly dislikable main character you grow to hate so vehemently you do not feel any emotion trudging through this. Somehow it's also boring. It is simply boring and arduous to read.  I love the performative arts and was looking forward to this. It just reminded me of all the disgusting bad sides of theatre, the tiny percentage that is disgusting about it, leaving out all the wonderful, joyous and magnificent. Nothing was learned. Was that the purpose?

Many reviewers call this funny, hilarious, but I found it moving and evocative of mono-no-aware. There are sections in the book which were drawn out, but as the story moved to its conclusion, the pace quickened and the ending was perfect.

Incredible. A new favorite. A must-listen, as Lennon brings the Irishness and humor of the story to life.

This book is about the role of art and hope, especially in tough times, and I appreciate that having these don’t necessarily solve everything. Lampo as narrator has a strong voice and you really get to know him. Despite all his flaws and how annoying his decisions are at times, I enjoyed rooting for him.

“Is the source of all love a lacking? Is that what creates emotion? Not a presence but an absence. Do you need to be empty to be filled?”

“The gods have brought me low, just like Heracles, yet thinking this raises my spirits some, and though it hurts like a bastard, putting a spin on the pain makes it my own.”

“Common sense is common, has no imagination, and only works by precedent. It leaves the man who follows it poorer, if not in pocket, then in his heart. Fuck common sense.”
