The book was well-written - the love story was a slow burn, but worth it. Not bad character development; some things are confusing at first, but you learn with Effy.
Predictable, but good. -
Knew Angharad would be the mom
Thought Ianto was gonna be working with the kind or the king was posing as Ianto, which isn't entirely wrong
Angharad writing the book was surprising and unexpected, but I knew Effy was seeing real visions

Of Reid’s 3 currently available novels, this one is probably my second favorite. Her writing flourishes and her characters are delightfully deep and interesting as always, she has taken her history of cultural study and put it to good use creating a rich world for her characters. No spoilers - but while I had an inkling about the twist (and was correct) reading the characters’ unravelling of the mystery was awesome. Just a super fun read - even with some of the heavier motifs and themes. It felt incredibly real for a fantasy world. Can’t wait to see what else Reid has in store for us!

(Very minor spoilers for romance)

Also: let’s hear it for a non-cliched love interest. Hallelujah! He isn’t all rippling pectorals and brooding dark eyes. Boys with glasses can get it too!

I am genuinely blown away. holy god what a book. Ava Reid isn’t just an auto buy author anymore, they’ve transcended that so completely that I would place a preorder for their grocery list if she ever put it up for publishing. I mark my love for a book by two thing:
1- if i cry after finishing it (which i did).
2- if i hug it after i finish it (which, to no one’s surprise, i also did)
so yeah, i adored every page, and if Ava ever decided to properly write Angharad, I would fly to the nearest bookstore that had it, camp in front of it, and pay for it with my actual soul, if the need arose.

Anyway, 5/5, no notes, flawless masterpiece.

“You don’t have to take up a sword. Survival is bravery too.”

This book completely swept me away. I fell in love with the characters—their growth, their struggles, and how real they felt. Watching them change and slowly open up was one of my favorite parts. The story is wrapped in this beautiful, slightly haunting magic that lingers long after you finish. It’s the perfect mix of dark academia, folklore, and quiet, powerful emotion. I’m still thinking about it. 🌊📚✨
