Always a Sally Rooney lover.
Connell is a bitch in this, interesting, but a bitch anyway. I'm glad he was so much more likeable in Normal People, the novel that Sally Rooney wrote based on this story.
The BDSM thing is way better in this short story from my memory of normal people. But maybe it was handle the same and I don't remember ? Anyway I'm sure the telling at the bar watching sports was not in the novel so there is definitely something better on BDSM in this.
It's reliable, in a different way than Normal people, but the two ways are working wonderfully

it's so interesting to read this after normal people with the knowledge that this was the birthplace of marianne and connell - comparisons are inevitable, and i was just constantly thinking about how their characters differed from the novel. i think connell is slightly softened in the novel, compared to the short story. marianne is shaded in more complexly in the novel. beyond that, though, classic sally rooney. goes down like water. made me chuckle. unavoidable, probably, that i think about it linearly from novel to short story, that it's hard to think of it the other way round, but i know it's impressive how she spun this out into a whole book. amazing how she sketches out the basic relationship dynamic between marianne and connell in such a short story; it looks easy because i know what's coming and what to expect, but still.

more marianne and connell content? scrumptious.

a piece that was written prior to normal people, i came across this as i fell down a sally rooney rabbit hole - as one does. currently reading cwf and i was curious to see if the side character marianne could perhaps be our marianne sheridan, in my quest for an answer i stumbled across this lil number. giving me one more lil sally rooney hit, blessed.
