The description of the battle of gettysburg had me feeling sick to my stomach thinking about what those men went through. Great story telling, this book was a pleasure to read!

Amazing, simply amazing. Elegant rendition of the Gettysburg battle and the players on that bloody stage. Lee as a throwback to another time and way of fighting was particularly poignant, as was Longstreet's desperate attempt to prevent the slaughter.

When I read this book it was the summer before eighth grade and we didn't learn about the civil war yet. I found it very hard to comprehend who the generals were and what side they were fighting for. If I was a history teacher I would wait until my students learned about the civil war. As an advance reader I did't find the language hard or even the book to be long but it was hard because I didn't know a lot of details of the civil war.
