The novel’s structure of different chapters focusing on different people who affect Ruby’s life doesn’t work.  It’s a jumble of out of sequence time periods.  It’s so fragmentary it was a struggle to read.

really beautiful story and love how all the characters were woven together. Maybe would have liked a breakdown of each character and their specific relation to Ruby since there are a lot of names to keep track of but did not hinder the storyline or arch whatsoever

balancing the humor of ruby alongside her anger, lisa bird-wilson gives us the puzzle pieces in this book to slowly piece together ruby’s life. you join ruby in trying to assemble the picture of her, her heritage, her lovers, and her families. a beautiful story, equal parts funny and heart rending at times. (read for my book club!)

I think this book deserves a higher rating than I can give it for my own experience of it... I struggled with the vignette/non linear timeline format. The difficulty with that was balanced out by the internal narrative style. I love getting lost in a main character's head. Ruby feels like a real person to me now. I want better for her and I am left wishing I, personally, could undo the harms of colonizer institutionalization and displacement of Native people. If all that never happened, what stories could the Rubys of the world tell?
