Strange.. and probably a claustrophobic read for me. Not as claustrophobic as At Night All Blood is Black (ANABIB) though, but most of ANABIB storylines take place in a trench which will of course, be claustrophobic. This isn’t the case with The Hole, not really in a close compound, but a paralysed state can make the story claustrophobic too and make it worse.

I have seen recommendations on social media, and most were good, but this is not really the case on my end. For me, the plot is predictable. I even debated it with my husband when reading the summary, and he said if that was the case, it would be too easy. However, seems like this is a reverse psychology. Hye-Young Pyun was tricking me into believing what I predicted would be too easy, and I was frustrated to know that my prediction was correct. I took about a week to finish this novel albeit how short it is, I was so curious to know what the MIL intentions is, it motivates me to continue on.

I believe The Hole was supposed to be a psychological thriller(?) but not entirely(?) isn’t a psychological thriller supposed to be intriguing and grasping? The Hole, for me, was a bit lengthy, and some parts read like a self-help book. This book makes me lose control, trying to grasp the MIL intentions with the hole and go back saying, “No, there must be a more sinister plot”, and I don’t like it when I lose control.

There are some parts I think Hye-Young Pyun did an excellent job of, like how she portrayed the MIL; her character is insane, terrifying and if I was in Oghi's place, scared me to bit! Also, some scenes were so awkward and terrible that it made my skin crawl. She is also very good at portraying the feeling of dread along the storyline. I like the ending though, it made me stare blankly for a while, thinking about what should’ve happened if they had made a correct decision earlier in their marriage.

This book might be a hit for some and a miss for another, but for me, it's neither, average probably. Overall, 3🌟 for The Hole.

It felt like the story didn't really go anywhere and there was no real resolution or takeaway. The themes and dialogue presented in the book felt uninspired and didn't offer anything new or thought-provoking. It was frustrating to invest time in a story that didn't seem to have a clear message or purpose, especially when the ending felt like a cliché that everyone is already aware of. Would not recommend this book to anyone ever.

If you like claustrophobic horror then this is the book for you. It's very reflective since Oghi has nothing to do but reminisce all day. Small book that packs a punch
