This was a really good read! I love Verne's science-fiction (Journey to the Center of the Earth just makes me happy) and I'm interested in Russia so I thought it would be fun. It's definitely very intense, and there were multiple times where I thought the game was truly up, but it really keeps you guessing what will happen next. Especially in the last half it's a real page-turner, and the action scenes are very exciting. I quite liked it.
It is a 19th century book though, so along with that there are some long-winded descriptions of sights and scenes and internal character monologues. Also, a few remarks on the "Tartar race" or the "Mongol race," etc. etc., so it's a product of its time. Still, a very exciting tale of racing against time.

Oui, il y a le Tour du monde et 20000 lieux sous les mers, mais Michel Strogoff était mon oeuvre préférée de Jules Verne à l'adolescence...
This is the second time I read this book, and this is the second time I liked it. It has a corageuos hero, a noble heroine, and a cruel villain. The sad part is, I just discovered that my edition is a short one, so I hope to re-read it a third time in a better one, hopefully in French, to grasp entirely Verne's words.
Un clásico. Grandiosa novela con un final que a mis ojos de niño le pareció inesperado y genial, incluyendo la explicación física del suceso. Maravilloso. Imprescindible.
Me ha alegrado leer este libro, porque hace poco viajé en el transiberiano de Moscú a Irkuts y lago Baikal y es bonito leer una novela que transcurre en esta zona. Me pareció entretenido y lo he leído en francés sin mayores problemas, lo cual me alegra bastante. La única pega que le pongo es al final que está un poco traído de los pelos y además parece que Julio Verne tiene mucha prisa en terminarlo en unas cuantas frases. Evidentemente también tiene el típico maniqueísmo del bueno, super bueno y el malísimo que condensa todos los defectos. Sin embargo, hay que tener en cuenta la época en que se escribió y que es un libro infantil.
Leí de pequeña varios de sus libros y los disfruté mucho, pero este se me había escapado. Me ha parecido interesante también de saber de paso sobre la existencia de Madame de Bourboulon que junto a su marido Alphonse viajó desde Pekín a Moscú y después a París por tierra y barco en 1861.

I remember reading this book in my childhood and being completely immersed in the story. I seldom re-read a book when younger, but this one, I have read at least twice and enjoyed it immensely both times. Jules Verne was at or near his peak as a writer, with this plot, and he did a great job. The plot follows the adventures of a special courier for the Czar of Russia, during a turbulent period of Russian history, as he overcomes repeated obstacles in accomplishing his mission. One reviewer describes it is a Mission Impossible type story, it is somewhat, but more in the Indiana Jones style. I highly recommend this book.

Jules Verne memang selalu tentang petualangan. Berbalut scifi dengan setting 20.000 league di bawah laut, di perut bumi atau nun jauh tinggi ke bulan, atau petualangan berbekal keberanian seperti perjalanan mengelilingi dunia, dan dalam novel ini perjalanan melintasi Siberia di kala pemberontakan sedang menunggu pecah.
Di sini, tokoh utamanya adalah seorang kurir Tsar Rusia yg diberi mandat membawa surat super penting tentang pengkhianatan yg akan terjadi kepada komandan garis depan yg notabene adalah adik Tsar. Perjalanan antara Moskow menuju Irkutsk, di masa damai saja bisa memakan waktu sebulan yg berat, apalagi ini saat kota-kota ditutup, jalan-jalan tak aman dan serangan terjadi di mana-mana. Sang kurir juga harus menghindari kecurigaan -dan pembunuhan- yg dilakukan sang pengkhianat demi mencegah dirinya sampai ke kota Irkutsk.
Walau awalnya alur berjalan amat sangat lambat, dengan fact-dumping yang keterlaluan banyaknya, namun menjelang sepertiga jalan, kisah makin lancar, seru dan makin cepat. Ada pula sub plot tentang 2 orang wartawan perang dari Inggris dan Perancis rada konyol yang memperingan nuansa gelap peperangan. Twist di klimaks kisah lumayanlah bikin deg2an, tapi seperti semua kisah Verne, penutup yang manis menunggu di halaman akhir.
Meski tak sepopuler Around the World in 80 days atau Journey to the Center on the Earth atau kisah2 Capt. Nemo, aku menikmati perjalanan lintas Siberia ini. Mikhail Strogoff, kurir Tsar, akhirnya berhasil menyelesaikan misinya! *tarik napas lega*
