Quick casual review ahead:

This book was very mid and honestly a little forgettable. I had a fun enough time listening and was definitely hooked enough to want to find out what happened. However, I felt like the themes around enslavement and white supremacy could have been explored in a lot more depth. I simultaneously felt that I could have enjoyed the storyline significantly more in a short story form as there were many aspects of the overarching plot that were predictable and drawn out.

Overall I had a fun enough time but was very much left wanting more!

I felt like this book was very heavy but had enough mystery and twists to keep you engaged. 70% through I felt like we were running nonstop (in the best way possible). Overall this story really made me reflect on the atrocities of slavery and made me realize how even I was desensitized to it to a certain degree.  It truly should never be a topic to be made light of and was probably one of the worst things to happen in human history.

This was another book that I read for my "Literary Hauntings" class. It wasn't like the normal "hauntings" that we'd been reading about, but it was the most realistic, and certainly the most visceral, emotional and raw. The combination of history and the supernatural is the perfect encapsulation of what the gothic really is – our pasts coming back to haunt us. The novel played perfectly into this archetype, with a tense tone and winding suspense keeping it in place. It used gore and mental anguish to create a haunting aura that has lasted with me long since reading.

Wow! I really loved this book. It went much deeper into both the issues and soul of the events than I had anticipated. This is no mere thriller (though it works very well on that front too), it’s a thriller that also informs us of some of US history’s major events in terms of race and slavery. It certainly does not shy away from difficult subjects, and I really appreciate the way the author chose to deal with America’s current stance on and history of slavery, racism, prejudice and abuse. Very brave and very important!

Some have called this a ghost story, I would not. I interpreted what is portrayed as ghosts more like history speaking to the characters through different means, the ghosts mere echoes or representations of the past rather than actual apparitions. So, if you’re not into ghost stories, don’t let that hinder you reading this excellent book!

I listened to the audio edition, and loved the narration.
