This is a quick read, with practical, research-based advice. A lot of things he talks about are things I learned in therapy or do anyway, like talking to myself by name when I need to do something difficult or calm down. I appreciated learning the reasons why such things work. I also appreciated the guidance for productive venting with a friend, finding a balance between validation and rumination.

This book is a useful run down of how to adjust the tone of our mental chatter. For me, I am now more aware of some simple tools I have available to me, including walks outside and reinterpreting my experience.
This is also a good resource in relationships, particularly but not limited to parenting. It’s helpful to be more aware of how you can coach and support others in dealing with their chatter.
It should be noted that the book is significantly shorter than it appears, with over 70+ pages of footnotes and indexes. The 171 pages of material are meaty and thankfully the author includes a handy cheat sheet at the end.
