Chatter

Ethan Kross

3.87 AVERAGE

This book provides some practical guidance on how to work with the chatter that goes on inside of your head, especially when it overwhelms you and how to work with it and not against it.

This book explains what our inner voice is, why we need it to function well in our world, how to stop it from sabotaging our progress and also how to effectively use it.

It’s easy to forget the specific tools he recommends to use and in what context. To help with this problem there is one short chapter dedicated to summarizing the major points at the end of the book. I really appreciate them adding this. I’ll refer back to this often. Well done.

Loved the book, must read for sure and it was a nice surprise to find that I was already doing some tehniques since I was a child.
At the end of the book you can find all the sources for the studies in the book which further proves the authenticity of the author and the information he has provided.

Restated a lot of material already presented in other books, e.g. nature calms us, social media makes us feel worse, etc.

Also spends multiple chapters justifying why mental chatter is important. Since we are reading this book, we clearly already agree.

A few points I liked:

When talking to ourselves in a negative situation, using "you" helps create mental distance and perspective.

When a friend is bummed, providing invisible support (e.g. doing dishes silently) can be better than overt support. Obvious support can make the person feel dependent.

When giving advice, a combo of empathy and practical perspective is best. Combine Kirk and Spock.

Rituals help us feel better due to the placebo effect and feeling connected to a larger community.

What a terrific book. It is a slim volume but one with almost no wasted words.

Great summary book about inner chatter and how it affects us!
