I liked the settings of both the first half and the second half of the book and appreciated the depiction of gold rush into the Sacramento area. However, the plot was plodding and the end was disappointing. So many ends left dangling without any real purpose.
Allende's writing lends to a well paced story that really makes you love her characters. I think I found a new favorite author!
For this being a love story, I absolutely adored that it was not really a love story. At the heart of this novel is the tale of two individuals driven by love who find that the only love they really need is in and for themselves. There needs to be more stories like this, ones focused on asexual love.
Set during the 1850, first in Chile and then in California, Elisa is the adopted daughter of a wealthy brother and sister who raise her as their own. Of course, there is much more to it than that but Elisa's mysterious history is not what intrigued me the most. What drove me to follow her story was how the typical tale of love changed for her. Upon falling for her first love, Elisa runs after him when he leaves for California. This girl held herself up as a stowaway on a ship for weeks just to find this guy and then continues to travel nearly all of California to see him again. Her perseverance and strength was astounding to read as she left her high class womanly manners behind to become a wilding man in the frontier. But in this transition, I believe Elisa found herself and realized a comfort in her own body that she never had before. All the while she interacts with Tao, a Chinese doctor Shanghaied by her seafaring uncle and then roped into helping her, first on her voyage and then in California. And while there was the possibility of a romance between them, I liked that it was more friendship that was culminated between Elisa and Tao. Honestly, not enough stories are about men and women being friends and I really enjoyed that this one was this at heart.
I want empanadas. Elisa was a good cook and her food sounded delicious. Just had to put that important fact out there too. Anyway, in the grand scheme of things I loved this book and I deeply believe that there needs to be more like it. Love is important, but there is also love outside of romance and this novel showed the importance of this possibility.

Esta lectura me mantuvo enganchada de inicio a fin, Isabel Allende no deja de sorprenderme.
En esta historia nos encontramos con Eliza Sommers uno de los mejores personajes femeninos que he leído, una mujer que es vulnerable hacia el amor de Joaquín, sin embargo tampoco tiene miedo de embarcarse en una aventura por medio mundo para encontrarlo. Siento que cada personaje de la historia tiene algo que aportar, ninguno es relleno.
Además es magnífico el talento de la autora para congeniar las diferentes culturas en especial la chilena y la china. Otro de los motivos que hicieron que me agradara la novela, es la amistad entre Eliza y Tao Chi´en y como juntos se ayudaban mutuamente para sobrevivir en una zona donde eran considerados marginados, una dupla increíble.
No tengo otra opción más que ponerle 5 estrellas, y como dice la contraportada del libro, estos personajes se quedarán para siempre tanto en mi memoria como en mi corazón.
