So, the back of this book says it's a blend of The Hunger Games, The Selection, Graceling and Divergent. I haven't read Graceling, but I've read the others. The Hunger Games was the only one I even kind of liked. I recognise all the elements. And even when I think of everything in the book, objectively it seems as silly and unoriginal as The Selection. These kinds of books have to be really, REALLY good to make me like it.

But Aveyard makes all these elements her own, and she is an excellent storyteller. The elements don't seem as stupid aa I'd normally think. It is woven into a gripping and compelling story that I couldn't help but be invested in. I really cared and I really enjoyed it, which almost never happens in this genre for me.

(And okay, beautiful princes happen to check all my boxes, sue me.)

EDIT: I had a think and took it down a star, because I do believe each book in a series should be able to stand on its own and leave such big threads untied.

I am in such a bad reading slump right now and the idea of listening to this book gives me no pleasure. Not to say I won't come back to read in the future, but right now I don't wanna get into a new series when I have so many on the go

I just could not get into this book. It started off way too slow, and it fell flat. It was very political, which I’m not the biggest fan of unless it’s written right.

Pretty formulaic YA, but that doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable. I can't wait for the sequel.

That was a rollercoaster of emotions, to say the least. I never got bored when reading, not even once, so this book 100% deserves 5 stars. I loved the storyline, the characters, and everything else in between. There were so many moments in this book where I thought I knew what would happen in the end, but ultimately, I was proven wrong. I love books that give me false hope in certain situations, and also books that make me not know who to trust. The Red Queen combined those two things into a perfect story of love, betrayal, and power. Overall, I definitely recommend giving this a read if you like anything I've said in this review.
