A generous 3 stars for this forgettable 'thriller'. The rating would have been lower had I not listened to this on audio at 3x speed (the narration was painfully slow and disjointed).

Before Reading Please Make Sure to Check the Trigger Warnings!!

I really enjoyed this mystery story. I loved the inclusion of the podcast (especially on audio). It really added another layer to the story that made it feel more tangible. Alongside being a mystery I think that this books also tackled some difficult topics in a really great way. Such as rape culture, victim blaming, and our court systems process for convicting a potential rapist. This book was hard to read at time but also so important and poignant.

Aside from the harder topics it was also just a well written and highly engaging story. The two cases that were being sold simultaneously really kept me on the edge of myself and I didn't find myself wanting to skip ahead at any part to get to one story's conclusion over the other. They were paces so well and really kept me guessing. I think the core story was a bit more obvious which I liked and I really appreciate how it was handled in general. As for Hanna's side of the story that was being told from here perspective from over 25 years ago I felt was quite compelling.

I did think the ending was a little too easy and wrapped up in a nice pretty bow but other than that it was a great story that I enjoyed from start to finish. I don't read a lot of thriller / mysteries so I cannot speak to how original this is but overall I would recommend this to most mystery reads. Just make sure to check the trigger warnings before going into this story.

“we have this unfair disparity in rape cases where the victim gets—let's call it what it is—violated. twice. the first time in the attack. the second time in court.”

the night swim is a courtroom thriller and mystery tale about two rapes that occured in the same city roughly 25 years apart. one of them is at trial and the other never even received a police investigation. one victim is alive and other is dead.

this is my very first megan goldin book and it wasn't an easy read because of how heavy, dark, and emotional the topic is. i actually doesn't have any expectation with this one because i didn't even read the synopsis before i picked this out. but it didn't disappoint me.

i guess it's safe to say that i somehow expected who the killer was hence my rating. the night swim is a page turner mystery thriller book and definitely worth the read and your time.

Audio version was entertaining with the podcast element. Extremely dark/heavy subject matter but I never guessed the ending, which is rare and a big plus.

This book was fast paced, sensitive, and relatively trauma informed.

The story lines blended together seamlessly. There were some genuine moments of surprise.

Justice is not always served in the way we desire, but there was something relatively satisfying about the ends being tied up in this book.
