The marriage portrait is a speculative exploration of the short life of Lucrezia, who is married to the Duke of Ferrara as a teenager and tragically dies shortly after her marriage.
This book took me a while to get into. The descriptions of renaissance Italy and the beautiful prose kept me intrigued. I finished it quite quickly once I got into it.
The end was interesting, I wasn’t a huge fan. I liked the dream like quality of it. But I always find it uncomfortable when the poor character is thrown under the bus like that, too poor and unimportant to even have someone shed a tear for her.
Overall, it is a solid 4 stars for me. The standouts were the beautiful atmosphere and prose.

I can understand why some readers adored this, but I think overall the story was just not for me. The writing was good, though I think the impact was somewhat dulled over audio. I have to say though, for most of the book I was a little confused as to where we were supposed to be headed, and I found Alfonso to be a bit of a caricature. Ultimately, the ending is what knocked this down to 3 stars. [How am I supposed to rejoice that this woman got to live happily ever after painting all she wanted when it means that an innocent servant girl was murdered in her place? Not the feminist retelling some people would like to believe it is.

It was an enjoyable book that kept me reading, but the writing was a bit overly descriptive at times. I'm all for pretty prose, but it was just overdone.
