Bear! Bear! Bear!

I loved him, even with his need to always do the right thing and the self sacrificing. I loved him with my whole heart and I loved this book with my whole heart.

I wanted to protect Nora so much, especially since it's a dual POV and you know what's going on. I wanted to love them and care for them.

Wanted to like it so much more than I did. Love Nikki Payne, but felt this one was overly dramatic and that the characters were a hot mess of miscommunication and ultimately rather unlikeable, especially the younger sister, who was grating to say the least. some of the flowers to me back to the Austen and so feel unfair to peg on Payne, but I do think this could have been better in various ways - more emotional maturity from grown folks, more context fleshed out (renovating the inn is this huge component and yet I have no sense of it), and so on. Enjoyable to read but left me wanting…

I liked this book, but I found it kind of overwrought and too much. The Sense and Sensibility-tie-in felt forced and weird at points, and the younger sister (whose name I already forgot, oops) truly felt like a caricature that I couldn't get behind. I couldn't always follow the story, and the plot truly felt shoehorned in. I did like the writing at points, and I love Jane Austen so I think I'll give Pride and Protest a try, but this was disappointing overall.

It’s hard to make S&S a modern story, but if you’ve read Pride & Protest, you know Nikki Payne has the skill. Bear is my favorite.
