Pretty awesome lead up to the Knightfall story arc. Old school Bane. Very cool.

one of the worst story arcs and one of the worst characters. Sam Kieth's cover art and contributions are great though.

Just saying, Tim called Jean-Paul cute twice in this story and also cut his hair. Guys being dudes.
I enjoy Bane's character to a certain extent, I like the fact that he's obsessed with Batman to the point where he's saved his life multiple times just because he wants to be the one to kill him. You know, this point of Bruces life is full of people that are really huge fans of him, from Tim to Bane you really have the two ends of the spectrum. You also have the depression arc which is fascinating to try and figure out. Tim is on the edge between "he needs to get out there" and "he needs to rest", Alfred does not know what to do anymore, Lucius Fox exists and is sweet as usual. We slowly see Bruce descend into this spiral, blaming himself more and more for small failures, and my only wish would have been that Jason Todd's death was brought up in this one. Like, if he's depressed, surely having a dead son would be brought up into this. Surely the nightmares would be about his dead son rather than his dead parents. Surely.
Tim and Jean Paul are a very interesting team, although I'm not sure why they did that to poor Jean-Paul's costume. He deserved a bit more. Instead he looked like the spike head dude from a few issues past. I like seeing Tim try and deal with him, and again, I would have liked to see Jean-Paul being a bit more terrified about this mind control thing, but I guess we're already having one man trying to talk about his emotions so that will have to be enough. Also I would have liked to see him and the general dudeguy interact a bit. He was a cool concept.

More of a 3.5 than a 4. The artwork is decent to very good.
The Batman is getting old... at least that is what seems to constantly be going through the mind of Bruce Wayne as he goes out night after night as the Caped Crusader. Even as Batman worries about slowing down, a new enemy, Bane, begins probing for weakness and planning his attack.
Generally interesting if a bit heavy handed at times. Batman really just needs to take a night or two off, but this seems to be impossible for him.

I decided to finally give Knight fall a read. I remember as a kid seeing posters at a local news stand with images of Bane breaking Batman's back, and I can remember seeing the actual comic on the shelf, but I was living for the new Batman costume with the spikes and the extreme design. Anyway, I digress...

Overall, this was an excellent intro to the Knight fall story. In this volume, we meet Bane, and we see his grand plan build as he is like a hunter sizing up his prey. I would say this collection is almost perfect, but I do wish that DC added the Sword of Azreal limited series because it just feels like Az just shows up and we are expected to know and care about this character based on a couple of summary pages.

Interesting stories that highlight what appears to be a decline for our main hero. Knowing what this is a Prelude to (since it is right there in the title) appears to be important as a reader to get a grasp as to why this collection is vital reading before the main story of Knightfall. Does a good job of setting up things. Not the best, but I am a bit tainted as a not huge Batman fan. Trying, however, to get out of that box.
