I devoured this book in a single sitting and it got me out of an awful reading rut. Huang makes a completely despicable character incredibly engaging and fascinating, and this comes through in not only the plot but also in June's narrative voice. I love the metafictive aspects of the book, too; with the blurred lines between the book's world and reality, Huang gives a really compelling commentary on race and publishing. Even though I just finished, I *wish* I could read it for the first time again!

Could not put this book down! Such a damning exploration of the publishing industry and white entitlement. Absolutely loved Kuang’s portrayal of June: she’s so hatable, and yet, I found myself basking in the feeling of literary stardom alongside her. I felt complicit in her crimes, reading her POV, yet the repulsiveness of her actions was never once lost on me. I’ve read halfway through The Poppy War and have loved it so far, but it’s so rich with the author’s research and the depth of her fantasy world that I find it takes a lot of mind-power to get through. YELLOWFACE, however, was written in a style that was much easier and more addictive to consume. It’s the first book in ages that I’ve finished in less than 3 days. Highly recommend!
