I feel like this rating is kind of an unpopular opinion? It's not that I didn't like it (because 3 stars is not a bad rating!!!), I can see why people love it, I just wasn't completely invested in the story. I also think I may have read it quicker and enjoyed it more if I'd read it at a different time, I just ended up being busy and the classical writing style was too much for my tired brain.

The writing was funny at times, but sometimes the wording was confusing, but I feel like this is a sign of the time it was written and I have historically had an interesting time with classical writing. Bilbo Baggins was funny as a character and I did enjoy his character, but I never really felt emotionally connected or invested which meant I never got completely involved in what was happening.

Definitely not a bad book by any means and if you're into funny, goofy fantasy then this would be for you!

I'd rank the story at 4 stars (it's a classic) but the narration by Andy Serkis is amazing!

I can't believe it took me 26 years of being alive on god's green earth before I read The Hobbit. This story is DELIGHTFUL!!! I would have crushed this book in only a couple days if it wasn't for how busy of a week it was -- and honestly, the fact I finished it in just a week considering how little time I had is a testament to how great this book is. I don't have to go on, it's a cozy, adventurous, and unbelievably fun classic and everyone should have the pleasure of reading The Hobbit :)

I'm not sure what it was specifically about it—was it the poor pacing, the dry writing, the awkward dialogue, the impersonal characters? I'm not sure. But regardless, it's just...not at all engaging. I wanted to just suck it up and power through it but after nearly two years and three failed attempts to finish, I doubt I'll actually get the motivation to finish it, which was wholly disappointing seeing how influential and praised that this book is. I just wish it weren't so mind-numbingly boring.
