The first half was annoying but the second part actually finally had stakes I cared about (romance, I guess?)

I found this book definitely a lot harder to get into than the first book and I definitely found some of the plot lines really weird like they were unnecessary,
Spoiler to follow
I didn't understand the use of rape as a plot device, or the use of incest as a plot device as it just felt really unnecessary and the author didn't really feel like he knew what he was doing with it and it didn't feel like it drove the plot forward, I definitely found myself early on in this book being like what is happening, especially when we reintroduced Renna and I was like why is her dad doing this to her and what does it have to do with the storyline, I don't think it really Drew any contacts from you and it really didn't add anything to the storyline, I think the author could have done with a more creative way of introducing her in as another other strong female lead without having her father raping her to make her this strong wonderful character,
I definitely wanted towards the end to give it more stars as it got better as the story went, but as per other reviews the story definitely isn't as enticing and or interesting as the first book, I'm going to read the next book but after that I don't know if I'm going to continue with the series

Read it in one sitting, couldn't concentrate on anything else, even though my college deadlines are around the corner. A point in the author's favour, however this book was much slower than the last one and there were a few parts about which I couldn't care a lot. showing Jardir's backstory makes the reader empathize with him, but the betrayal is still too fresh and I don't care much for him, even if it is a result of manipulation and more. However, the character developments - all of them - have been well done here, especially that of Leesha and Rojer, and of course, Renna.
The attack of feels in Miln when Arlen returns was exquisitely done, however the best part of the book, and this series, remains its unpredictability, with no clear indication of how it may end, and who will emerge as the true Deliverer - hoping its Arlen though.
For now, good job, Mr Brett. Good job, well done.

Realized I just don't like this kind of story after a couple chapters, so gave up on the series. Too grim dark/rapey for me. So don't take my 1 star as meaning "It's a bad book," instead take it to mean "I don't like it."

I remember liking this series; it holds up. That said, the magic system is trash. It changes wildly from book to book and even mid-book. There is ZERO consistency. An obvious example: covering wards is supposed to make magic not work, but whether blood and dirt block wards on skin changes from battle to battle. That said, if you are looking for fun fantasy with lots of graphic demon fighting, you'll be plenty amused.
While I did enjoy the book, its treatment of the 'Middle Eastern-inspired' characters ranges from not great to blatantly racist. Unfortunately, this is a major plot point and thus an insurmountable flaw for the series as a whole.
