A great second book, I can't wait for the 3rd.

Patricia Wrede has always been one of my favorite authors, and I adore seeing how Eff's Magic is growing and changing. The more she learns the more I want to see doc what great deeds she'll do, after all she is a seventh daughter.

A good sequel to Thirteenth Child. This picks up a bit after the ending of the first book, and follows Eff on her latest journey into the West. There is more roughing it and pioneering, plus plenty of magic. The effects of the ending of the first book are also revealed, and more is shared about the various types of magic in this world.

Read like the first book - diary entry highlights. Really enjoyed it.
Slow burn on the plot with several mini climaxes happening throughout the story all culminating information for the ‘final battle’. Of which read like all the other mini battles only this ones’ information was told to us slowly.
Moved on from the coming of age book of the previous one and showcased even more of Eff’s amazing personality. Really cool watching her different struggle with magic this time round. I can see her slowly coming into her own, she’s still a little bare in character development but I can take that at face value with the books targeted audience being so young.
Good to see more development of Lan and William, fingers crossed the og cast comes back in the third I’d love to see the new dynamics as their personalities have changed.
Love the world. Goddamnit I love this freaking world. I don’t know if the first book did all the heavy lifting with world building but the places in this book always felt so familiar and easy to conjure up. Not a lot of description either which I think helped me and my 0.02 second attention span stay in the story easier.
All round a good adventure.

.

I'm enjoying seeing this universe continue to develop. In part this is because the reader isn't learning about it alone - the characters are also learning and finding new plants, animals, and magic in unexplored areas of the alternate-west. Almost anything else I say will have pretty big spoilers (if not for this book, then for the first), so I'll just leave it at I look forward to the sequel.

Ok, but I don't see why the very cool and very magical narrator takes such a backseat to her "more powerful" but really just more confident twin.
