I was on the waitlist for this book with my library FOR SIX MONTHS!!!! I was psyched to finally read it. I thought it had an interesting premise and liked where everything was going, up to one point at the end. The whole Nancy twist really threw me, I’m still a little confused on that if I’m honest. But it’s a Good For Her™️ book nonetheless! I also really liked and appreciated the author’s note and afterword. Will definitely read more from this author!

No fucking shot a man wrote this. No fucking shot a man wrote my favorite piece of feminist literature I’ve read to date. Shocking, funny, poignant, and most of all, accurate. Letter-perfect to the experience of being a woman. Nat Cassidy may not know, and he may not understand, but he fucking listens. Nat Cassidy has women in his life that feel safe and loved enough to talk to him, and Nat Cassidy committed every word they said to him to eternal memory.

It’s also, frankly, a genius book. Mary is a character that is so easy to hate and so easy to sympathize with at the same time. I found myself going back and forth with every page turn. The plot twists were so well done. There is a twist that you catch on with, and I think you’re meant to, but then there’s another that blows you out of the damn water, and it still makes sense! It makes perfect sense! It makes you go “goddammit, of course!”

A 2024 favorite so far. Read this book.

Mary was a wild ride and took a lot of turns I wasn't expecting. I loved nearly every moment. I listened to this one on audible and the narrator, Susan Bennett, performed the best narration I have ever listened to. She was able to portray all the characters without making anyone sound goofy and really brought the main character to life. Would highly recommend for audio, just maybe get the consent of anyone in listening range, because Mary doesn't hold back.

NGL dude this one was just too brutal for me. Felt too unwell to justify continuing reading after the cactus scene.

I almost DNFed this book, but then there was a hook that got me. I'm glad I finished! There were parts of this that really creeped me out, but also parts that made me laugh. Mary sometimes felt relatable and her inner-monolgue was sometimes funny, and other times super depressing and hard to read.
But please, don't make the same mistake as me. Do not read the afterword.
And DEFINITELY check content warnings!
