This was a Barbara Havers centric entry in the series and I really enjoyed it.

Even though she's American, I consider Elizabeth George my favorite contemporary British author of detective fiction. I never tire of the Lynley/Havers dynamic and fortunately there is plenty of Havers in this story.
Havers attends a feminist author's book signing and ends up later having to partner with Nkata to find out who murdered her. Of course Havers continues to be on Ardey's bad side and is on a very tight leash.
I couldn't stop smiling at the end of the book due to the various small good fortunes that fall upon Havers. She has new relationships and pursuits (tap dancing, even). Looking forward to see what happens to Havers in the next novel.

I loved the character development. It was great (as always) seeing Havers (and Nkata, another favorite of mine) prominently featured in the story. I also enjoyed reading about Lynley's professional and personal life. I enjoyed the sparring with Ardry. Reminded me of the Lynley for earliey books.
The mystery itself was well-written and I found the characters compelling.

Et si l'Autre, que l'on croyait si bien connaître, révélait, sans crier gare, sa part d'ombre...?

This was a 3.5 for me. The psychological part of the crime solving was interesting but ultimately a little too disturbing.

I think this is my favorite Inspector Lynley book to date. The Caroline character is brilliantly realized. And as a side note I'll give an extra star to any author who uses an interesting car well.

Loved it! I really liked the linear introduction of the characters - in some previous books there are several seemingly unrelated story lines which is jarring. I was invested in the story though the middle got a bit draggy. And hurrah for some hope for both Lynley & Havers, on their own terms!

Totally serviceable mystery. Listened to it on audiobook, which was perfect for long walks during COVID social distancing time.

I've read all the inspector Lynley books except for What Came Before he Shot Her, which I own in pb, and #18 which I missed somehow and have on hold from the library.
The page-turningest book I've read in quite some time, involving a few ridiculously late nights. A terrific read.
