The book started off as interesting, but slowly became difficult to read. I also hated where the author decided to throw in swear words, as it often did nothing to intensify the story in any way.
I'm still confused as to how Sebastian and Ari's relationship even started... One second he "hated her" the next they're making out in a bar. Confusing, if you ask me.
Also, at times , I found myself having to go back a page, thinking I had skipped something. Unfortunately, I hadn't skipped anything but the story seemed to skip crucial information at places. I found myself asking "how did we even get here?!"
All in all, I would recommend this book only if you have a lot of patience to figure out what is going on!

Darkness Becomes Her is an unbelievably original novel that completely won me over!
Granted, Darkness Becomes Her has somewhat of a rocky start.First 40 pages or so.You have to get used to Ari's character, who comes on a little too strong for a 17 year old girl and acclimate to the utterly new, semi-dystopian/futuristic surroundings. DBH takes place in New 2, which actually is the city of New Orleans, partially rebuild by the Novem(made up of 9 families)after the hurricane Katrina in 2005.So, as you probably have guessed there is a lot to absorb at first. However, as you continue reading you'll quickly find yourself lost in this amazing world Keaton has created!
I loved all the characters in DBH.Brace yourselves, there are a lot, but each and every one of them is memorable because they have their own voice and distinguishable personalities.
Ari is a tough, VERY tough teenage girl. She has survived several foster homes and very bad living conditions. She is determined to find her true origins and nothing will get in her way. Then she meets Sebastian, whom she likes instantly. Now you know I am not a fan of the 2 minutes head over heels thing.Fortunately, Ari wasn't either!I loved how she constantly chastised herself for falling for a stranger so quickly. She knows it's not "natural" to like someone she barely knows and she is not afraid to say it.That made me admire Ari and made her feelings towards Sebastian all the more believable to me.That and her abhorrence to snakes(I can completely relate!), had me practically adoring her by the end of the book!
As for the story...where do I begin?Vampires, warlocks, shifters, harpies, mythical monsters, vengeful Greek goddesses, all of them part of a unique and imaginative story you will not want to end!Add to that a shocking revelation towards the end, and you have yourself a book that you just don't wanna miss!
Recommended.

I loved how different this story was. Such an original. I'm iffy about the romance because it has the trademark YA I've just met you but I'm really into you already... I really like Ari's personality. She's pretty amazing - a rebel who I can't help root for.

The story takes place in the US around year 2025. 13 years ago a series of freak storms hit New Orleans and the government never succeeded in rebuilding it. A group of 9 rich families got together and bought the city, renaming it New 2. People outside know little of the place, and are told scary stories of what happens inside the borders of the city. That people who are different from the original human being lives there. Ari enters the city in her search for answers about her past. She discovers a whole new world she always suspected but never knew of.
The character Ari is a girl who has lived in different foster homes since she was 4 years old. She is strong both mentally and physically. Her latest family is bounty hunters who taught her how to fight. She also has a strong opinion on things and likes to speak her mind, but she also knows when to walk away. She is described to have white hair that looks like silver in the sun and pale teal eyes. Ari hates them and are sure they are a part o the curse that runs in her family. She sees herself as an outcast who just wants to be normal, but on her journey to New 2 she discovers that she might not be so unnatural after all.
The story is about Ari who tries to find out more about her biological family who left her when she was 4 years old. She talks to a doctor who tells her that her mother killed herself, but left a few belongings. She finds a letter that tells her to stay away from New 2, but Ari feels like she has to go so that she can discover who she really is. In this time she also discovers that there is a curse on her family. She tries to seek information on the curse on who put it there, and what it does, and that is what the book is about.
There is quite a lot of descriptions in the beginning of the book. I personally have a hard time reading these, both because I find some of it hard to understand (I’m Norwegian, remember) and because I find it boring to read about the smallest details of every room in a house. I only found it a problem in the beginning when the author described the main areas where things take place. After a while the descriptions grew shorter and I forgot all about them,
I really enjoyed this book! The setting and people in it are so interesting. I really love the world inside the walls of New 2. This is also one of the few books besides Percy Jackson that I feel does the Greek Myths justice. I love the way the author has interpreted the myth. All in all it is a great book, with a new and interesting story.

Darkness Becomes Her was a pretty good read. The story was pretty fast-paced and held my attention. Ari is a powerful heroine, which is always a good sign. Seriously, she kicks way more butt than anyone else in the story, especially when it comes to close-range fighting. Ari is a pretty sympathetic character for the most part, although there was one chapter where she went to a vampire party that made me a bit irritated with her.
The story building was a little weaker. Taken in sections it's pretty cool, but, all in one book, it didn't really work for me. First of all, there is New 2. There was a series of devastating hurricanes that effed up New Orleans. Afterwards, the government abandoned the city as too costly to restore, so a group of nine wealthy families (The Novem) purchased the city. They fixed up some of the city and made it a safe haven for special folks, because the Novem consist of three witch families, three vampire families and three shifter families. Paranormal: check.
Then, as you read on about the curse and everything, you learn that there is another facet to the plot. Greek gods and other figures from mythology are totally running around and doing awful things. Definitely important to remember that Athena is not just the Goddess of Wisdom, but also the Goddess of War (which I always thought was a bit of a stupid combination, although wisdom is good for strategy). Mythology: check.
So basically, this story has every possible magical/paranormal/powerful being possible. While all cool, the combination really just didn't work for me. I think the story would have been a lot stronger with either just the first section or just the second. Overall, a fun, if a bit silly, teen read. A second book is in the works, judging from the ending of this one, and I do intend to give it a shot.

Ari, a seventeen year-old with a unique look: silver hair and teal eyes, has always felt out of place. Abandoned at a young age, Ari was thrust into the foster care system. Now, she's determined to find out what happened to her mother even if it leads her to New 2, the rebuilt city of New Orleans. Having been destroyed by hurricanes, with a government unwilling to rebuild, the most powerful families of New Orleans pool their massive wealth in order to buy what is left of New Orleans. The rebuild and New 2 is the result. A place unlike any other where rumors of supernatural creatures run rampant.
Ari's quest to find out who she is leads her to this unfamiliar territory. However, with her otherworldly looks and her general otherness, Ari finds that she feels at home among the freaks and outcasts of New 2. But the more she learns about herself and her ancestry, Ari finds that perhaps she is a freak among the freaks. Just what sort of monster might she become?
Overall, Darkness Becomes Her was an enjoyable read although much darker and disturbing than most of the other paranormals out there. However, there was at least one aspect of the story that I found lacking.
But let's start with what I liked.
I liked that Ari was such a strong female character considering all that she'd been through. Having been abandoned at a young age Ari ended up in the foster care system and suffered some unspeakable horrors, many of which are merely alluded to in the book, while other atrocities are mentioned outright. I know that some readers have difficulty reading about abuse inflicted on children, so these forays into Ari's past may be a turn-off for some readers. However, Ari tries not to dwell on her past but to focus on the here and now.
I think Ari's difficult past allows her to handle all the weirdness that is thrown at her. She doesn't spend a lot of time dwelling on why things are happening, she just accepts things and reacts accordingly. For those that enjoy a fast paced read, Darkness Becomes Her certainly fits the bill. There is nary a lull in the action.
The secondary characters in Darkness Becomes Her added to my enjoyment of the story. They're colorful, intriguing characters. Especially Violet and her albino alligator.
The romance aspect of this book felt rushed. While I think Sebastian will be an excellent, swoon worthy character. I felt the romance between Ari and Sebastian was a bit premature. Because there is so much action in the book I didn't buy into the romance between these two. Had their relationship developed a little more, I'd have been ok with it, but as it stands I thought that aspect of the novel was weak.
Darkness Becomes Her mixes a lot of supernatural beings from voo-doo priestess to vamps to Greek gods and goddesses. Sometimes I have a hard time when an author mixes so many supernatural entities. I feel like the world building can suffer so far that doesn't seem to be the case with Darkness Becomes Her but I am wary of the amount of supernatural aspects. I hope Keaton can keep it all in check!
Darkness Becomes Her mixes traditional supernatural creatures with Greek mythology and the result is the start of a darkly, disturbing, action packed paranormal series.

The book is set in future New Orleans after the hurricanes. Ari has grown in foster homes and has tried to find out who her parents are, and maybe an explanation to her silver hair and teal eyes. After finding out her mother committed suicide, Ari finds letter in written by her mother that warns of a curse and to stay away from New 2 (New Orleans as it’s now called).
After Ari is attacked she decides to leave for New 2 where she discovers more about her family and meets new friends.
This is bit darker YA book and that’s probably why I enjoyed it so much. It was very action packed with kick-ass heroin and Greek mythology. What’s not to like?
I liked Ari and she’s not damsel in distress by any means. Her latest foster parents taught her to use weapons and defend herself. She has somehow foul mouth and there was surprisingly much cursing for YA book, I thought it was refreshing.
The book was much shorter than I would have guessed and the events takes place in few days time. And because of that there’s lot going on all the time which was fine except for the romance part. It just felt so rushed and again it takes pretty much one look and she’s head over heels in love. I liked them together but I wish there would have been more developing there.
But aside from that thing I loved the book and it was quite fast reading. Can’t wait for the next book!
And I have to say I like US cover so much more. I’m not fan of this one at all.
