I enjoyed this more than the other stories but I do hope this author eventually breaks out of her comfort zone. It felt very familiar and was fairly predictable. The imagery was beautiful though and being from Toronto and originally from a small town I appreciated how the setting was captured. This is definitely one of her strongest written books.
This was almost a four star read and could have been a five star but for two things.

- The author has a habit of dropping people of colour into her books but not really giving them any depth. I don’t consider that diversity but tokenism and it’s annoying. I always remove a star for lack of diversity because it’s not that hard. It’s a deliberate choice to focus on one group of people and it gets old really fast.
- The MMC was a walking red flag. I’m sorry but this wouldn’t have been an HEA for me (well mot for him anyway!). I would have left him in the dust. Showing up on his doorstep? Now way. Maybe I’m too much of a hard ass but I would NEVER trust him again. It ended sweetly but I couldn’t get past his terrible and selfish decision making. Will was right about one thing, he is not relationship material!
I was also really not a fan of the narrator. It’s always the same narrator and she literally sounds like a teenager. It worked for some of the books, but not for this one or the one based in PEI.

Good book. The characters were fun and I really liked their overall development. I really liked Fern and Will. The day they spent together years ago DID feel like cheating and I found myself not feeling completely comfortable reading it. It was really fun and summery otherwise. Will did some stuff I really didn’t like and somehow it felt like Fern got hurt over and over again.

Carley Fortune’s writing in this is beautiful and she has a gift for description and lovely prose. I really liked Fern and her layered relationship with her mother and Peter in this story. I really enjoyed the format and how we switched settings between 10 years in the past when Will and Fern first met, the present, and Maggie’s diaries from her early twenties.
I really appreciated Will and Fern’s day together. It was described beautifully and I just love the idea that a day started through happenstance became so important and beautiful. I did really wish they weren’t both in relationships at the time. The emotional cheating/having very strong feelings for someone else is not my favorite. I wish at a minimum that Fern had been more open about her relationship with Will and told Jamie about Will, though it seems like she made the right call after in ending her relationship with Jamie.
The reasons I didn’t rate this book higher are all Will and his lack of communication and transparency. I just didn’t understand why he kept himself and his life so segmented from Fern in the present.
In the past, I get that Fern had a boyfriend and then he was in a bad place with anxiety nine years prior. What I don’t get is why he couldn’t have simply explained or at least sent a text or called on his drive back to say that Sophia was ill and he needed to return to Toronto as it was an emergency. I didn’t think the explanation was sufficient. And then the fact that he wouldn’t try to fix things and that they were only solved because his sister intervened and told Fern the situation…I just found the lack of communication frustrating and frankly immature. The “past girlfriends had issues with my involvement in my niece’s life” excuse just seemed silly. Fern had demonstrated she didn’t have an issue with it. I appreciate that people make mistakes and I am glad for Fern’s persistence but it just felt to me like Fern made all the effort and we didn’t get to see Will learn from his mistakes and actually learn to be honest and better at communicating. I hope Will is seeing a coach or therapist because he has things to work on for sure.

Well, this was probably a 3 star read until the last couple of chapters where I was not amused, I didn't find it romantic, and it was just boring.
In fact, the whole story was pretty slow and never quite grabbed me. I don't know if I would read more by this author.
