Disappointing, after her first novel. Boring. All her female characters sound the same. He has no personality and she shoehorns in a line about him having anxiety at the end for no purpose other than attempting to give him flavor.
Reading this in conjunction with her first, I realize she writes her heroines to be self-absorbed and her heroes too obsessed and self-sacrificing to a fault. They bend and change their personalities for her and why? The heroines wouldn't make any compromises in return. He forms himself around her and it's uncomfortable.
Fortune's obsession with cheating is a bit concerning...I can understand one book but she attempts it again, here. You can have friends to lovers WITHOUT cheating! There are more barriers you can create to a blossoming relationship than an existing relationship!
Sophomore novels are hard after writing a bestseller, I want to recognize that, and they're often not as good. Just the name of the game. But I do wonder about the various accusations of plagiarism of the first...the writing here was nowhere near as good as her first. I felt I was reading a completely different author (besides the setting, cheating, and self-absorbed heroine.)
