Not quite as brain-bending as the first one and more of a straightforward, linear story as Breq deals with social and class oppression on a backwater planet. Still a solid character-driven story that sets up a whole lot of stuff for the sequel(s?). Adding the Presger intrigue and Ghost Gates on top of everything else and then making us wait for the third book is just cruel, though. :)

another banger!! i liked it a little less than the first in the series, but that’s such a small margin that it’s still getting top ratings

Absolutely not a good audiobook choice, but an enjoyable tale nonetheless. The connections between local plot and overall plot are clever and a new mystery about the Ghost Gate makes me look forward to the next book.

I love the characters so much and the plot is so unique and interesting!! I love how there's this big general conflict and we mostly focus on the people who are most adversely impacted! Also the world building is stellar - I love all the nonverbal gestures.

Notes to self:
- sometimes found family is your thousand year old co-worker you picked up off the floor, a sentient ship, it's crew, including a kid that is now part 17, part 3000 year old god-king. Gotta work with what you got
- obsessing over tea is all fun and games until we use it as a case study of colonial economy
- the plot thickens!
- hoping to see more Presger and their Translators in book 3
- a nice touch: sometimes people enacting social injustices are also assholes with personal problems you can very much pity.
- actually just in general, there's a sense that people are making decisions based on their understanding of the world and what's just, proper, and beneficial. People doing shitty things are very much people, not cartoonish cackling villains. That's even discussed explicitly at some point - a point that bears repeating.
