Not as captivating as the first book, and way more sad. But interesting enough to read

This book plodded. For me that's usually a deal killer. In spite of that, I enjoyed this story and found myself compelled to continue reading when the time I had to read was over. This was largely due to the protagonist, Breq whose unique backstory overcame the pedestrian pacing. It was not enough to merit four stars or perhaps entice me to book three but she definitely merited three stars.

This wasn't quite as mind-bending as the first book, but is still a fun and entertaining and seriously good bit of thinking-person's space opera. For most readers it'll be less of a challenge because they will have been accustomed to the most surprising thing about this series: that most of the time every character is referred to as she or her, regardless of gender because the main language of the civilization refers to everyone that way. I think it's possible that for many people this ends up being a puzzle where the reader is looking for clues to everyone's gender; for me it didn't read that way, I found it just didn't really matter what anyone was.

Really looking forward to the next book!

Keep going

If a fan of Ancillary Justice, continue on! The first third of the book i would say, for me, started a bit slow. I'm very happy i continued though. This novel continues to flesh out Brew and the universe she finds herself in. Incredibly unique and provoking.

This was a little slow, and ultimately not a lot really happened. It definitely felt like a lot of cool-down and set-up, which was disappointing after the first book felt so complete. Still, it was well written and super smart. I basically tore through the 2nd half of the book once I had some time to read it, so I guess whatever pacing concerns I have didn't affect my interest in finishing it. I'm very much looking forward to reading the 3rd book, which I intend to do pretty much right now.
