It was good, but I don't think I will read the next book. It seems there will be a love triangle, and I'm sick and tired of that.

4,5* I fucking loved this book, can't wait for Lady Smoke 😫

This book started a little slow, but once I got into it I really liked it. It was written for a younger age, but I still really enjoyed it.
The love triangle was fun to read about and I loved the political aspect.
Really fun book and I'm excited to read the next!
I think you'll like this book if you like the red queen, the hunger games, the selection, etc.

Me: I’m going to go to bed early

Ash Princess sitting on my nightstand with only 100 pages left: no you’re not

Me: you know what you’re right let’s do this

Needless to say I stayed up as long as it took to finish it!

I think the biggest issue I had is that it relied too much on violence to make us sympathetic towards the main character, especially in the beginning. It was just tragedy after tragedy without creating a connection. The love interest, as well as the triangle felt very surface level. Also, blaze (one of said love interest) is a horribly cringe name.

I know the book was a YA but it felt like the author was really talking down and spoon feeding the reader.

All that being said, it was entertaining. But not enough for me to continue onto the series because I didn’t fall in love with any of the characters.

The blurb of this book is the most captivating part. The first few chapters had me wanting to keep reading, but after the quarter mark, I had a feeling I knew how the book was going to end.

Now, I do not want to diminish the characters or the world building. The author does a great job creating a world that is easy to picture in your head and making the characters stand out. I will be reading the rest of the series. I hope the other two books are much better than this one.
