How could I not love a story about a sarcastic unicorn named Steve and his valkyrie companion as they take on the world of cage fighting? My favorite parts were definitely the inclusions of creatures often overlooked. Great, fun story!

Weird and brilliant. McBride writes bright, descriptive scenes and quick action sequences without being too lofty or verbose. "Heads Will Roll" is a crackpot's delight of a short story.

Another Tor.com short story.

Okay, I think this is my favorite Tor story so far. I really hope I get to read more about the Half Valkyrie trainer and her avenging unicorn. This is one of the first stories I've read that gets all of the mythology RIGHT. It's rare to see an author do their research and then not make changes to what they learn. I'm all fangirl squee about this :)

Fun short story from the "Necromancer" universe. Introduces some great new characters, whom I hope will now be making an appearance in the main series!

This was a campy, off kilter romp of the best sort.

The characters in Heads Will Roll made me sad to see this short story end. I really loved the relationship between Lena and Steve (the unicorn). The fact that they telepathically communicate and the way this was described by McBride was great. I thought the story was heartwarming in a way, easily compared to real life situations of shutting down dog fighting rings. The ending was great, the additional characters joining Lena and Steve seem like they would add a lot of drama and hijinks. I would absolutely love to see this short story world turned into a full-length novel!

Great short look into a different area in McBride's Necromancer world. Would love to hear more about these characters in an actual novel.
