Timothy Zahn's Star Wars novels about Luke and Mara were so formative for me as a youth. I've reread these so many times.

I really enjoyed this one, even if it was a bit longer than it needed to be. There was a lot of build up but it paid off with a great ending. And one of the many side plots features a great character in Moranda Savich, who is now near the top of my list of favorite EU characters. I plan to read Tales of the New Republic soon for more about her. Too bad that’s her only other appearance.

Disappointing. There were just too many characters, too many plots which ultimately hampered my enjoyment of this book. I had trouble keeping track of all the characters and all the plot lines running and I found many of the plots to be plodding.

This book is... Good. I've read a lot of Zahn's books and perhaps he's grown into his writing style, because throughout all his books he shows a love for myriad storylines that somehow come together at the end to create a coherent ending. But in this book specifically, there were so many disparate storylines that in the end I found some of them (Han and Leia with the Bothans, Kaarde and the Imperials) super interesting but others (Luke and Mara in the caverns) super boring and anticlimactic. And considering that this book is almost 700 pages long - not the 500 that GR says it is- it's a lot to ask of the reader. I was ultimately satisfied by the ending but if you want to read SW books and/or other Zahn books, there are many others I'd recommend ahead of this one.

You really need to read the whole duology, the first book leaves on a cliffhanger and is just ramping up, this felt like a proper closure of a lot of stories,

It only briefly touched on the threat that is to come and felt a little under developed at that point. At the end i was saying to myself but what about this loose end?, what were they talking about and trying to recruit the character for, why did they go against there own to battle and prepare for this unknown threat?

Other than that it was a nice finish to a storyline
