Don’t ask me what this was about I slept through most of it

I've absolutely adored every other Guy Gavriel Kay book I've read to date, but this one was a complete miss for me. The characters seemed flat, the story trite and generic, and the language not up to par with what I've come to expect from him. In the audiobook version read by Simon Vance, normally one of my favorite readers, the accents used were awkward and distracting and the cadence stilted.

Argh! I have to wait for my next credit for the next book!  This was so intense, I don't even know what to say about it.

Classic high fantasy. Lots of setup the first book in a trilogy but it manages to keep a good pace with compelling characters and political intrigue.

Some things about this one I really like. Some things I really don’t.

Did not quite get into it

My favorite book in my favorite series of all time- no really! I read The Summer Tree when if first came out years ago, and then lost track of it.

Rediscovering the book years later, and the two subsequent books in the series, stands as one of the most joyous reading experiences of my life.

These books are amazing, but are too haunting, beautiful and sad to read often.

I really wanted to like this one because Jacqueline Carey recommended it at a book signing. However, from the beginning the story felt somewhat lackluster and I was having a difficult time getting into it. Usually I'm able to push through the urge to give up on a book like that but the quality of the writing just didn't merit the effort. Kay has several annoying habits, one of which was using a character's last name way too frequently, something that grated on my nerves to the point where I was tempted to grab a pen and start editing--a sure sign that it's time to put the book down.
