“I loathe you more intensely than a thousand burning suns.”
“So what you’re saying is… you have strong feelings for me?”
I was instantly drawn to this book with its twist on the Sleeping Beauty fairytale, and Crown of Slumber did not disappoint. You’ll instantly find yourself swept up in fae politics, dragons who will steal your heart, and a romance that had the perfect balance of tension and banter.
“Dragons made much better company than fae nobles.”
With a first line like this you bet I was hooked from the first page. I too would prefer a dragon. Especially with how Perez writes hers, they are giant affectionate puppy like terrors and I loved every scene they were in! They definitely tugged on your heart strings while also adding great comedic moments. Who doesn’t love dragons?
“I find your sour attitude quite endearing, little firebird.”
I will never get enough of the banter that accompanies the enemies to lovers trope. I loved how prickly they could be with each other while still slowly letting down their walls. They are complex characters with intense history’s and their relationship was done in a very believable way. Even if I wanted to knock their heads together a time or two
“It was easy to don the mask everyone expected me to wear. But I had grown accustomed to taking off that mask for her.”
This was a great standalone and introduction to this world and I’m really glad I had the chance to read it!

If you are a fan of HOTD and witches this is the book for you!
I truly loved this book!!
There's adventures, magic, dragons, courts and spells. This retelling is definitely very different from the ones that I read before: it's more creative with the plot and with the plot twists and switches up some things that can make a difference when choosing a retelling story.

recieved an ARC for an honest review
the story follows aurelia princess of the summer court and fennick prince of the midnight court. Aurelias kingdom soon falls under a wicked sleeping spell and she figures out the only one who can help her is fennick of the midnight court, which sucks because the summer court and midnight court are sworn enemies.
Together they must figure out a way to lift the sleeping spell but they soon find out its much deeper than they think.
The story is amazing it has everything a romantasy retelling should have, great romance, dragons, fae, witches and magic. The writing is amazing and so so captivating.
I genuinely enjoyed this book as my first retelling story ever and i would for sure pick up the next book in this series or other books by this author.
The only thing I did not really like were the spice scenes. They were not written in a way that was enjoyable for me to read but they were such minor scenes it didnt really affect the overall feel of the book
if you like romantasy retellings i recommend to pick this book up when it comes out on september 15th!

Something really neat and unique about this book is that it is a sleeping beauty retelling, so you know the major plot points. BUT even though you know what's coming, you don't really know the magnitude of what's coming. That's good writing.
Think Disney meets Game of Thrones. You get dragons, you get magic and witches, you get court politics, you get unseelie creatures, you get the sleeping beauty curse, you get a love story.
Honestly, it felt like a really good mashup of everything, and I wanted to keep reading more every time I picked it up.
I love love LOVED that the FMC was very strong and independent. We need more of that in our lives.
I really enjoyed that there was some dabbles of spice. It wasn't the plot, but it was tastefully sprinkled in and written in a way that didn't make me roll my eyes, lol.
Some of the tropes:
Enemies to lovers
Fake engagement
One room/one bed

I would like to thank NetGalley and Willow Haven Press for providing me with an ARC of Crown of Slumber. I could not put this book down!
Crown of Slumber alternates being told from two perspectives: Aurelia, the Summer Princess, and Fenn, the Midnight Prince. The two strike a bargain when they discover each has something the other needs. Aurelia has dragons that are capable of protecting Fenn's kingdom from monsters who attack in the dark. Fenn has access to stardust, the only substance capable of saving Aurelia's kingdom from a powerful sleeping curse. Since their respective kingdoms are enemies, they agree to a fake engagement to explain why Aurelia is traveling with Fenn to retrieve the stardust. As they travel together, they realize their initial assumptions about each other were incorrect, and they begin to care for each other.
I fell in love with both Aurelia and Fenn. I really liked how Fenn always seemed to know what Aurelia needed and how he had her back without second thought. I loved the banter between the two of them.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a steamy fairytale retelling or who enjoys magical creatures (in this case dragons!) who act like large puppies. This is the first book I’ve read by R.L. Perez, but it definitely won’t be the last!
However, as a content warning (which is given in the author's note at the beginning of the book): although it is not described in detail, there are mentions of a previous sexual assault recounted by one character to another
