My wife and I found the Bosch TV series, and binged it...even to the Bosch: Legacy. Love the characters, Harry Bosch and Los Angeles.

Sometime during the binge, I found out that it was based in a series of books...so little by little, I've been picking them up (and some gifted to me). I now have them all...so here comes another binge (hopefully).

I recently watched a CBS Sunday special with the author, and was intrigued by the way he talked about the character of Harry Bosch, so that's why I started it, yesterday.

This first book...did a lot of heavy lifting. It had to setup the character in the present, from his past, and how he was going to be going forward. The author says that he's an outsider looking in, and from that description...he nailed it.

I enjoyed the complexity of the case, and all the nefarious characters...that eventually found their end. I can say that I realized one of the bad guys, before Bosche, but didn't have the ability to put the pieces together to prove it..so reading it, explained it perfectly.

I look forward to reading more about Bosch and him swimming up stream, solving cases...the right way.

Corpse is found in a tunnel, and Bosch recognizes him as a tunnel rat like Bosch was during war. Bosch recognizes Billy Meadows from the tattoo. HB ticks off FBI who calls the LAPD. This get Irving to sic IAD Lewis and Clark on HB. HB gets FBI to withdraw complaint and gets himself lent to FBI and becomes partnered with Eleanor Wish. Her boss, Rourke, doesn't trust HB. They figure out that Meadows was part of a robbery team that tunneled into a bank. They figure out there must have been something specific in one of the boxes. At first they think drugs. They find out that Meadows had hooked up with 2 other vets. Find out they are stealing diamonds that Vietnamese are hiding in boxes. Informant Sharkey is killed. HB pissed. Finds out Rourke knew and planned the caper. HB and Wish connect Lewis and Clark killed when bungling around.

HB figures Wish a part of it after he is almost killed in the tunnels. Gets her to turn self in. Threatens to tell Vietnamese if she doesn't. She was part of it because they killed her brother all those years ago.

HB back in homicide. Wish heads in for 30 months. She sends him her Nighthawks painting. Their relationship begins in this book.

I read this book many years ago, but re-read it for book club. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. I'm a big fan of Harry and continue to read the books as they are published. I'm also a fan of the Amazon tv show based on the books. If you haven't read this series I highly recommend it.

superb

Michael never writes a bad book. Twists, turns, and surprises in the plot, and he is just a darn good writer.

I believe this was the first Harry Bosch book, and while it was better than some of the really recent ones, I can't say it was totally my favorite. There were definitely a few moments when I started figuring out the ending way before we got to the ending, which is always a bummer. But it's still a good quick read, and if you haven't started any of the Bosch books, this is a good one to start with. But then you should read the Scarecrow....because that one is awesome.

Better than I expected. I picked this up out of curiosity after watching the TV series, and it had a few surprises within the typical detective story. It also made appreciate how good Titus Welliver is in bringing Harry Bosch to life on screen.

It's just a crime of the week, police procedural, buddy cop kind of affair. But it's an enjoyable one. Would gladly do again.

Cool book, I have read a couple of books later on in the series and decided to start at the beginning and it sets the characters of Bosch and Edgar up well.

This was very different than the type I usually read. I think it was on a list of books Stephen King has read and enjoyed or suggested for reading. I probably wouldn't have picked it up other wise. I read Connelly's "The Poet" and that was enjoyable too. Not a bad copy thriller. Little heavy on the Vietnam Vet slant, but not really in a bad way. Overall, I guess I haven't decided how I feel about this book. Need to think about it a bit more I guess.

This series was reccommended to me by a coworker who knows that I like to read book series. Outlander, Sookie Stackhouse, Patrick Kenzie, Eve Dallas. Lincoln Rhyme etc - if I like a character I want to read as many books featuring them as I can.

So far I like Harry Bosch. He's a loner, rogue detective - but not in a stereotypical way. I liked Connelly's writing style, and the pacing of the book. It was a tiny bit outdated (using landliness etc) but it was written in 1992, so some leeway is granted. I'll continue with the series because I like detective novels - but I guessed at the ending of this one so hopefully I'll be more surprised in the future!
