This book was going to get at maximum 4 stars throughout most of the book, the concept was good, plot was okay, but the main character annoyed me slightly, made idiotic choices and I found myself almost angry with them at times. Then the last third of the book absolutely tripped me up and then punched me in the heart on the way down just to make sure it really broke me. I finished the book in tears and it's definitely one I'll think back on often, both for the content and the emotions it rung from me, but also for how much this book managed to fool me.

This book was a lot less about grief and a lot more about teenage drama.
There was also not much about mental health issues (imaginary friend), instead it was more about magical realism.

We got a lot information about Chicago, which was OK, I guess. But personally I would have favored more about Japan. I enjoyed everything about the food description and the festivals. And I was very fond of the star theme which was spannen over the course of the story.

I liked the pacing and the fact that the author was able to condense the story within 300 pages.
This made this a quick and enjoyable read for me even if I couldn't 100% connect with the characters.
