I had high expectations for this book after You've Reached Sam, and I gotta say - it did not disappoint. As someone who daydreams and creates imaginary scenarios to deal with my problems, I thought the concept of the story was very fascinating. At times it was a bit confusing what was real and what was just in Eric's head, but to be honest, I think that's just the nature of the story.
The one thing I will say though, is the whole thing with Jasmine at the end confused me very much. I think she's dead, but I was having a hard time following

DUSTIN THAO THE GENIUS YOU ARE

Sam wrecked me, Haru gave me a shimmer of hope. This man writes angst so incredibly well!
Starting the reading year 2025 off well by finishing When Haru Was Here. What an incredible take on grieving, letting go and the light at the end of the tunnel.

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

I didn't like the writing style. It wasn't horrible, but it lacked immersion. I couldn't connect with the world.

Over all, I thought this was an ok book and I really enjoyed the ending. There are some really interesting concepts that I wish the author had invested more time in such as more scenes with the main characters family, Kevin, and Haru as well as explore how mental heath is affected by grief. Pacing was it was a slow start for me and I walked away from the story multiple times but near the end I felt like the author slapped me in the face and he completely shattered my heart. I guess I really needed a good cry.  Eric as a character was hard to like sometimes especially in the middle of the book, he made questionable choices, had lack luster dialogue, and never seemed to ask the right questions. But, I have to remind myself that he is only 19 and I believe that we don’t really explore the concept of death and deep grief until it happens to us.

The cover artwork is so beautiful and ethereal. I love it
