Really liked it in the end. Was certainly unique and managed to have surprisingly many story arcs for a single volume.

Dnf at chapter twenty-one, page 311.
I really tried to push my way through Peach Blossom Dept and was able to for a good majority of it but I couldn’t care much for the characters, I was also expecting a more light hearted plot line as it has been said that this author writes more light hearted danmei then what is usually written. I wanted a more fluffy light hearted romance for the characters, I didn’t mind that this story had some darker elements but there is zero romance included in this book.
The main character Song Yao was hinted to have interest in another immortal called Hengwen but that didn’t go anywhere, the slept in the same bed platonically which was fine with me and they were close to one another but that was about it. Did I mention that Hengwen got injuried and was transformed into a kid again in order to recover and Song Yao still shared the same bed with him and kissed him on the mouth. (During this time too, Song Yao was acting as a father figure to Hengwen and Tianshu who were injuried, they were recovering as children. Song Yao took them to recover in a mortal village and an older lady tried setting Song Yao in a marriage with a seventeen year old girl. Mind you Song Yao told the older lady he was forty)
I kept waiting for something just a midge of romance as this book was marketed as a “fantasy romance” which I believe to be misleading. I should have realized more than halfway through that I was going to be disappointed. I originally thought Song Yao and Tianshu Xingjun were going to end up together as it says in the summary that he was suppose to win the heart of his then break it. I wanted fluffy heartfelt scenes between the characters, for them to get attached, to get that heart wrenching moment where Tianshu Xingun finds out it was a lie. I wanted to experience Song Yao falling in love with Tianshu (or Hengwen) and see him doing things to prove he truly loved Tianshu but at last that never happened. This was truly a disappointing novel, even after dnfing a remember little about it and find myself forgetting character names. The only thing I can say I enjoyed was the beautiful cover, the artist did an amazing job on it.

This was such a a good read! I haven’t read a lot of danmei (only Heaven Official’s Blessing Vol 1) but I love the themes in these books - the meddling immortals, the reincarnation cycles and the quest for cultivation. This one was so twisty, with characters disguising themselves to try and manipulate others, all whilst trying not to piss off the immortal Jade Emperor!
This book follows Song Yao who, after being accidentally made into an immortal, is tasked with trying to break up the love affair between two other immortals who have been banished to the mortal realm. Whilst there Song Yao has to act like a villain and try to ruin the pair’s lives… even though he really doesn’t want to. He’s supported throughout by his friend (and maybe more 😏) Hengwen.
I love historicals of all backgrounds, but I really enjoy the Chinese folklore that I have found in danmei so far, especially around the animal demons that can become human (Xian Li, what a sweetheart) and the immortals in the heavenly realm. It reminds me of Greek myth retellings, with gods meddling with mortal affairs and being general choose whilst everyone is trying to get on with their lives!
The only reason this loses a star for me is because I found it really hard to connect with any of the characters outside of Song Yao - I felt the love interest, Hengwen, was a strange choice and for a lot of the book is was actually expecting it to be someone else (Tianshu) 😹 But that’s on me I think… I had assumed it was gonna be Xian Li for Hengwen and Tianshu for Song Yao, so the switch up left me a bit put out!
But regardless, a fab read and definitely one for Danmei fans out there!

DNF @ 65%. I had had such high hopes for this book and I wanted to like it, I really did. It did start out with something of a light-hearted romantic drama premise, and initially it looks like it was going to deliver on that front.
However, at over halfway through the book, I've reached a point where I just can't keep going. The way events and details and plot twists escalate in this story felt too absurd and lacking in cohesion, meaning my mental rubber band labeled "suspension of disbelief" was stretched over and over to the point of being very loose.
And at the point at which I had stopped, I felt like it would have been a very good close. Where I was at in the story and what was happening felt like it would have been the perfect spot to end in another couple of chapters. It still would have felt to me like it was largely nonsensical, but maybe this entire thing was a farce and we would now see the consequences of that farce and what it was really for, what the purpose of all this was. And yet there was still 45% left to go. On a quick skim through some of the other chapters, it appears the circumstances continue to get more and more absurd, and as I was already feeling like there was a serious lack of cohesion with the events in the story I am not confident that anything happening after that point would have salvaged this for me. Additionally I also took a look and realized that the main character did end up with the love interest that I thought he would; it felt somewhat obvious from the moment that character was introduced that they would be the endgame couple, but having that confirmation did cement for me that I don't need to continue slogging through this in order to reach that conclusion.
I feel weird about this, because by and large across the online danmei community, I see almost nothing but praise for Peach Blossom Debt. Almost everyone I've seen talk about it says that it was really good, that the read is very emotional and the ending left them crying and feeling moved. If I see anyone say they didn't enjoy it, it's usually attributed to the book "being too slow" for them. And all I can think is, did we really read the same book? I wanted to like this but it just isn't working for me, and I'm just done trying to force myself through it. It's not worth it for me.
