Manages to take the leads out of their home environment without making it feel too false.

The idea that staff would encourage visiting staff to take dinner in their rooms felt farfetched but generous.

While still enjoyable, it's a bit draggy and (for me) not as good as the first two. Also...one of the characters almost gets murdered and they are quite awful - it's probably not great that they are so disagreeable it's vaguely disappointing that they don't get bumped off!

Other than the fact that there was one key clue I caught right away and they seemingly didn’t until the end, I loved it. I kept mentally screaming it at them. Didn’t work.

Another entertaining Lady Hardcastle mystery, filled with absolutely charming characters and plenty of banter between Lady Hardcastle and Flo. I always love these books for their cosy mystery vibes and humour, although I will admit that there are elements of it that are getting repetitive. It always seems to be Flo doing the investigating and just bringing that information to Lady Hardcastle to sort out. It would be interesting to see some less common archetypes present in the secondary characters in future as well, because the quirkiness becomes less funny if every single character is quirky. The only other thing I didn't love was the amount of lead-up before any mystery began, and the somewhat predictable nature of the main elements of the final solve. But the identity of the killer was definitely surprising, and the twist (whilst predictable) played out in a very entertaining and tense manner. I always have fun reading these books and I look forward to continuing the series in future.

Excellent third instalment to the series. Kinsey gets around the whole “amateur sleuth meddling in police business” or “police deputise to amateur sleuth” by having the adventure take place in a new venue - Lady Hardcastle and Flo go to stay with LH’s friend at his estate, and the first death appears to the police as an accident - so they don’t take any further interest. LH and Flo of course, start investigating, and when a second murder happens, they knuckle down. Interesting plot, good characters, solid comedy - excellent addition to the series.
