For being a being a book we had to read in English class I think it’s quite good. Can’t say that I would’ve picked it myself and it was a bit boring but it’s well written and it’s got a really good plot twist. I wouldn’t go out of my way to get my friends to read it.

Read for Life's Library

I tend to prefer books with a romantic plot be told from one person's point of view because it's more interesting to me to have a limited perspective and wonder along with the character what the heck is going on with the other person. Woodson uses two narrators, but uses different points of view for each of them. We learn about Ellie's story directly from her, and Miah's narrative comes in third person. This was very interesting.

I loved how spare the writing is. Jacqueline Woodson is a master at painting a mural with a handful of words. The book also is a sweet romance, and captures the tentativeness and awkwardness of adolescent love. There's some good stuff about dating outside of your race and general hazards of being black in America.

This is a short, calm, quietly beautiful book that is worth reading.

This book didn't feel like reading a story, it felt like I was walking besides two teenagers living their normal, mundane lives. And in the beginning. I wondered if something was going to happen, since this is based on Shakespeare after all, but soon enough I forgot about it.

And then I came to the end, and it became painfully clear why this story had to be told like this. To show you that this is not a story, this is mundane life, still, for a large number of people living in this world, just trying to get home.

It helped change a mediocre story to an excellent one. This story helped see so much more what dangers and challenges black people face still, but hopefully not forever.

I read this when I was in the eighth grade I think.

the ending was actually a punch to my jugular but it's fine i'm fine
