Okay so I’m glad I got to this. There are not many adult fantasy books by black female authors out there and I did enjoy this. I think the world building could use a bit of work but the story got better as it progressed and I’ll be finishing this series. 3.5 stars.

There wasn't really any tension or stakes. I couldn't connect to either character. What did Caz want? Willow wanted to go home, but that was really it. I didn't feel like the characters were connecting all that well either and I was halfway through. It felt drawn out and the language wasn't particularly captivating/immersive. I wanted to finish this but I just wasn't excited to turn the page anymore.

This book had me hooked from beginning to end. I am so incredibly intrigued by the world, the writing, the characters, all of it. Shanora definitely has a way of entrancing you with the prose and immersing you into this world she created.
Not to mention the spice scenes are 🥵🥵
But then that ending 😱😱😱 I can't wait to find out what happens next and I will definitely be picking up more books by Williams
