3.75?? arturo was a great character I like his character, his personality, how he’s a family type person. the restaurant was awesome, the family was great it was cozy, made you feel like you were either in the restaurant or part of the family. the whole does he like his cousin wasn’t a bad thing either, keep in mind that actually wasn’t his cousin just like in hispanic or latino families they call people that aren’t actually their family, family you know what I mean so it’s OK for them to get together because they’re not actually cousins but it all depends on the family so I just want to say it was a great book I love the family and the restaurant. keeping up hope whenever something bad would happen like with the pipo guy and when the grandma died I found that part really sad but it also brought a lotta good things for the family even though they lost a very important person anyways good book recommend it
Why did I wait so long to pick up this book?! I really enjoyed it. Teresa tried to tell me. This is a funny and heartfelt story about a Cuban American family trying to save their restaurant when developers want to move in and gentrify their neighborhood. Hand to middle schoolers who like character-driven books that are both funny and serious and any kids who are driven to make a difference in their world. The audiobook is read by the author who is also an actor and he reads it really well with subtle but effective voices for the characters. Would listen again.

Great slice-of-life story of one Miami family restaurant.
The more books about Latino and other cultures the better! Plus a book for kids to learn about gentrification always a plus. The bad reviews are more from people who aren’t the target audience that this is for

Loved the atmosphere (Miami, the family and its history, the restaurant) and the way Spanish and poetry were woven into the story. José Martí plays a big role: his inspiring work and life still resonate.
Hard work and dreams helped the Zamora family prosper when they came to the US from Cuba. Their restaurant is now threatened by a slick and heartless developer, Wilfrido Pipo. Can the family convince the city council to vote against his development, which would be exclusive, ruin their close-knit neighborhood, and require that their restaurant be torn down?
Arturo's Abuela gives him a box from his Abuelo, filled with advice in the form of letters and poems. This helps Arturo fight for the restaurant and also inspires him to tell his close friend Carmen how he feels about her.
A great lesson in community activism.
I found the plotting a little clunky and Arturo doesn't take advantage of the opportunities he has to shine but maybe he just he needs the time to develop his confidence; by the end of the story, with the help of his family, I think he has.

This is probably one of my favorite books!!! It weaves together a bi-lingual family, social activism, poetry and Spanish and English. It is by far a masterpiece.
