Thanks to Netgalley for access to this ARC. I really enjoyed this story by Jessa Maxwell. The twists and turns were a mix of predictable and very surprising, so I liked that I could solve some of the mystery myself, but still had twists that I wasn't expecting. The pacing was good throughout and the various layers of the story aligned nicely for the main character.

Jessa Maxwell is an automatic buy author for me now. After reading [b:The Golden Spoon|61906070|The Golden Spoon|Jessa Maxwell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1700494047l/61906070._SY75_.jpg|94013066] I enjoyed their writing style, engaging mystery, and quirky characters. Picking up their second book was a nice surprise as it has much darker elements and very complex, layered characters, specifically the protagonist. The mystery elements are still very strong, especially having supporting characters that become funny amateur detectives with the protagonist which adds some light humor to a dark plot. There is a star deduction as I felt the author made the protagonist make a very dumb decision to get to the next plot point. If not for that, it would've been a 4-star book. I wasn't able to get past it as it felt lazy, especially when the whole book up to that point was very well developed and moving at a great pace. Overall, it is entertaining and enjoyable for experienced readers of mystery thrillers or those looking to get into it.

4.5 stars!! i loved this but one of the major plot twists at the end was a bit of a let down and a little out of place. it doesn’t take away from the fact that this was a really gripping and well-written story with an engaging plot. i am surprised with how low it’s rated on here.
i loved the quirky characters and how well developed alex was. i loved the setting and the fast-paced writing style. god i’m so stuck on whether this should be 4 or 5 stars from me.
